Lawn care hiring guide
How to choose a lawn care company
How to choose a lawn care company that fits your yard. Updated October 2026.
Decide what you want done
Lawn care companies range from mowing and edging crews to treatment programs with fertilizer and weed control, and some also offer aeration, overseeding, tree care, irrigation or landscaping. Decide which of these you need before you call.
Ask about the treatment program
- How many applications are in the yearly program, and roughly when?
- What does each visit include?
- How will they tell you when a visit happened and what was applied?
- Is a service call included if weeds come back between visits?
Check licensing and insurance
Companies that apply fertilizer and pesticides commercially in Kansas and Missouri are licensed through the state departments of agriculture. Ask for that information and for proof of liability insurance.
Understand pricing and contracts
- Is pricing based on lawn size? Ask how it was measured.
- Is there a prepay discount, and what happens if you cancel mid-season?
- Does the program renew automatically each year?
Get the agreement in writing
Before work starts, ask for a written estimate or contract that lists the work, materials, price, payment schedule, start date and any warranty terms. Keep copies of everything you sign and every receipt.
How we can help
Our rankings list local companies with details taken from each company’s own website and public business listings. We don’t publish ratings we can’t verify. Use a list to build a short list, then call two or three companies and compare what they tell you.
