- In St. Louis City and County, a like-for-like re-roof on a typical pitched roof usually doesn’t need a building permit, but a change of material does.
- We couldn’t find a Missouri statewide roofing contractor license; licensing and registration are handled locally in many St. Louis-area municipalities.
- The Missouri Department of Insurance advises reporting hail damage promptly and not making permanent repairs until your insurer has inspected the damage.
Every fact in this guide comes from the company’s own website, a manufacturer’s contractor directory, or an official source named in the text. Google ratings are shown per company, checked Oct 2026 and rechecked monthly. Claims we couldn’t verify were left out. Confirm details directly with the company before you hire. How do I choose a roofer in St. Louis?
Check certifications at the source: look the company up in the manufacturer’s contractor locator rather than trusting a badge on a truck. Get proof of insurance, with certificates for general liability and workers’ comp sent straight from the insurance agent. Get two or three written bids. Missouri’s Attorney General advises checking credentials and complaints with the AG’s office and the BBB, not prepaying, never paying cash, and inspecting the work before you pay. Ask about the permit, and get both warranties in writing. Red flags: door-to-door pressure, “today only” pricing, offers to cover your deductible, and no local address.
St. Louis and Missouri roofing FAQ
Do I need a permit to replace my roof in St. Louis County?
Usually not for a like-for-like job. St. Louis County code requires a reroofing permit for roofs with a slope under 4:12, and permits, plans and specifications for any change in roof covering system regardless of slope. Many municipalities have their own building departments, so check with your city if you're not in unincorporated County.
Do I need a permit to replace my roof in the City of St. Louis?
The City requires a building permit for an entire new roof when the work isn't a replacement with like material, or when more than 25% of the roof sheathing is removed and replaced. A like-material replacement with 25% or less sheathing replacement usually doesn't need one.
What about historic slate roofs in Soulard and Lafayette Square?
If your home is in a City Historic District, you need a permit for all exterior work except painting wood trim, and the Cultural Resources Office reviews it against that district's standards. Soulard's standards, for example, limit sloping-roof materials to original material, slate, cementitious synthetic slate, slate-proportioned composition shingles, approved sheet metal or heavy three-tab shingles, and require slate or synthetic slate for repairs on mansard roofs where more than 50% of the original slate remains. Lafayette Square has its own standards. Fitzgerald, Frederic and Republic all list slate work.
What is Missouri's law on storm-chasing roofers (RSMo 407.725)?
RSMo 407.725 says a contractor may not advertise or promise to pay or rebate any part of your insurance deductible. If you sign a contract to be paid through insurance, you may cancel it before midnight on the fifth business day after your insurer tells you in writing that all or part of the claim isn't covered, and the contractor must give you a cancellation notice and refund payments (except for acknowledged emergency work) within ten days. Contractors also may not represent or negotiate for you on the insurance claim. Violations are an unfair practice under the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act.
Does Missouri require a state roofing license?
We couldn't find a Missouri statewide roofing contractor license, but don't take that as the last word. Licensing and contractor registration are handled locally in many St. Louis-area municipalities, so ask your city's building department and ask the roofer for its local license or registration.
What should I do after hail damages my roof?
The Missouri Department of Insurance says to report the claim promptly, make temporary repairs to prevent more damage (such as tarping a hole) and keep receipts, and not make permanent repairs until your insurer has inspected the damage, or your claim might be denied. It also advises not letting contractors inspect your home unless you're watching, and being suspicious of solicitors. Its Insurance Consumer Hotline is 800-726-7390.
How much does a new roof cost in St. Louis?
We don't publish a price range, because we couldn't find an official or independent St. Louis source we trust. Cost depends on size, pitch, tear-off layers, decking and material: architectural shingles cost less than slate, tile or metal. Compare two or three written quotes with the same scope, brand and warranty terms.
Which St. Louis roofers work on slate and tile?
Based on their own sites, Fitzgerald Roofing, Frederic Roofing and Republic Roofing all list slate and tile work, and Ray Gilbert & Sons offers slate-style composite shingles.
