Roofing hiring guide
How to choose a roofer
A practical checklist for comparing roofing companies before you sign. Updated October 2026.
Start with what you need
Know whether you need a repair, a full replacement, an inspection or gutter and siding work at the same time. Some roofers focus on shingle replacement; others also handle flat roofs, slate, tile, siding or gutters. Matching the company to the job saves time.
Check that the company is local and established
- Look for a physical business address, not only a phone number.
- Ask how long the company has worked in your area under its current name.
- Ask whether the crew on your roof are employees or subcontractors.
Ask about licensing, insurance and permits
Licensing rules for roofers differ by city and county. Ask the company which local license or registration applies, and ask for a certificate of liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage. Ask who pulls the building permit if your city requires one.
Compare estimates line by line
- Is the old roof being removed, or is new material going over it?
- Which shingle or material brand and product line is included?
- Are underlayment, flashing, vents and drip edge listed?
- How is damaged decking priced if it is found?
- How long is the workmanship warranty, and what does the manufacturer warranty cover?
Be careful after a storm
After hail or wind storms, door-to-door crews often appear. Take your time, confirm the company’s local address and insurance, and be wary of anyone who pressures you to sign on the spot or asks for full payment before work begins.
Get the agreement in writing
Before work starts, ask for a written estimate or contract that lists the work, materials, price, payment schedule, start date and any warranty terms. Keep copies of everything you sign and every receipt.
How we can help
Our rankings list local companies with details taken from each company’s own website and public business listings. We don’t publish ratings we can’t verify. Use a list to build a short list, then call two or three companies and compare what they tell you.
